Good day friends my name is Meg today I want to touch on the topic of reading.
A selection of scientific studies on the benefits of reading.
The fact that reading is useful is perceived by many as an axiom, however there are many white spots in this statement. Firstly, it is not so obvious at all, because it is very difficult to measure the “usefulness” of reading. Most of the conclusions about the beneficial effects of reading on a person are actually based on theoretical assumptions rather than actual scientific research. Distrustful citizens, in turn, notice that reading fiction does not train any important real-life skills, does not provide important information, and if it develops, it is only imagination. There are even people who claim that reading is not only not useful, but, on the contrary, can be harmful, since it “separates” a person from reality, immersing them in imaginary worlds, and thus makes him less socially adapted. So the benefits of reading are far from obvious. A team of scientists (mostly from France) under the leadership of Stanislas Deene (Stanislas Dehaene) compared brain activity (with the help of the same MRI) to illiterate people, people who learned to read in adulthood and “ordinary”, literate since childhood. It turned out that when a text is recognized by a literate person, the visual area of ??the cerebral cortex begins to work much more intensively, the areas responsible for processing the audio information are activated, and several other brain centers are activated at the same time. But not only this characterizes the work of the “literate brain” - even when only oral information is perceived, a literate person begins to work more intensively than an illiterate person, the phonological area works and several other zones are included.
Researchers from Stanford University asked a group of candidates of science in literature to read the novel by Jane Austin (Jane Austin), while inside the apparatus of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). And in different ways. At first they read “just like that,” and then they were asked to focus on analyzing the text, as if they would need to give a talk at a scientific conference. It was found that analytic, detailed reading requires the performance of a certain complex cognitive function, which is usually not involved. In the transition from reading "for pleasure" to "analytical" reading, there is a sharp change in the types of nervous activity of the brain and the nature of blood circulation in the brain. Now we move on to some unexpected research. Contrary to popular belief, the staff of the University of Toulouse proved that reading while eating is not only not harmful, but, on the contrary, useful! For those people who do not part with a book at the table, food is absorbed much better than those who watch TV. While reading, a person chews food more slowly, as a result of which the food enters the stomach in a more crushed form and is well soaked with digestive juices. At the same time, we finish our already prolonged excursion into science. I hope that now you will have something to say to the question: “What is useful in general, is your reading?” After all, the use of reading is a scientifically proven fact. Just read on my blog
